I have posted details of a Half-Life 2 deathmatch on Saturday starting at 12:00 noon and will leave the server up until around 11 p.m. CST I'm hoping that with an 11 hour time frame, most of the members will get to play. I was also wondering if anyone has an idea for a game on Sunday. I was thinking possibly a Left 4 Dead server, thinking about rabbit but forgot he'd be out of town. Unfortunately, L4D is only 4 players though. Throw some game ideas out there to me and if I don't have the game, possibly g@rgoyle would or if Rabbit is available he most certainly would lol. Right now they are the only two moderators I have. Basically being a moderator, you have the power to kick players that are being unsportsmanly or just flat out pains. Also, the biggest help to me, you would have the ability to set up events. If you have an idea for a game and we don't have it, please volunteer to moderate, I don't expect anyone to give me much time moderating because it's not needed that much. I just would like more members to become involved in the games. That being said, I hope to see some of you Saturday.

I forgot to mention the password will be GOTD

Hi Wizzard; I'll try and join it sometime later today, it's just about Saturday). The journey to Orlando took a lot longer than I'd anticipated - 9 hours from Manchester airport in the UK to Chicago, nearly three hours wait, then nearly another three hours to Orlando. (Michelle told me it was only 9 hours in total. It was as painful as I thought it would be, but I survived. :)
I don't know what the bandwidth is at this hotel so it may not be a successful attempt, but will at least try.
As for my failed attempts at setting up a server last week (embarrased cough). I think G@rgoyle was right about the router being the problem as I used the steams L4D server download and set it up as an internet gme. I'll certainly be happy to set up regular servers each weekend. With respect to L4D servers, we could set up two if there were enought GOTD members available. I really think the coop games would be a blast. There's a whole list of games I'm keen on trying, so watch this space once I return to the UK in two weeks time.
If I don't manage to join I'l see you all for a game when I return. (I look forward to it)
Regards

Awww, you were so close to me friend, I could've driven up to Chicago and visited at the airport. Oh well, at least you're finally here right? You might be able to play the game especially since you won't be hosting the server so that will take alot of the bandwidth off your shoulders.
To the server problem. I'm not sure quite how you set your server up, but I set the server up using the source dedicated server tool in steam. I opened the server tool back up when it was time for the match to start and then I opened the game and connected to the server I started. When I first set the server up on the tool, at the top it gave the IP address of the event and that is what I copied and put into the Event Planner on Steam. Hopefully we can get that sorted out. =)
EDIT
I will be starting the event at 11:30 am CST instead of noon. I won't be home in time to start the server at noon, so I will start it at 11:30 right before I leave the house. I should be back right around 12:30 though, so everyone be ready for me. =DPosted 15 years ago # -
Hey Wizz....From the titles of the games you mentioned I assume people are killing each other, is that the case? If so would there be any games that don't involve killing anyone?
Posted 15 years ago # -
Hmm, looks like the only games left that I have would either be racing or a flight sim called HAWX but even there you'd be shooting down other players. It's not very common for there to be online games where there is no killing involved. The only ones I can think of would be racing and sports. RPG's are right on the line because of the killing but some, not many, don't revolve around killing....think The Sims which is part RPG part Sim. Perhaps rabbit might have some tricks under his hat though...you are dealing with a white rabbit and his wizard afterall. =D

One possibility for driving games that comes to mind is Trackmania Forever, one of the best games that is completely free to download, but I have no idea about how servers are set up within it.

OK so for those of you who may be wondering, we're experiencing technical difficulties again this weekend. I'm thinking something is wrong with Steam and is not recognizing that we are connecting through the internet and not lan based. I've gone over and over the port fowarding and open ports and none of it work. All of my firewalls are either disabled or allow the program and port through so I think the problem is on Steam's end. For those of you interested and played the first time, on your servers screen, you can go to your history tab and can still access the server. I'm done fooling with it for the day but I will leave it up in case anyone wants to play.

Hi Wizzard, I tried to join the game on Saturday evening, but the hotels security locked me ot when I clicked on join game. It took me until Monday to get reconnected, then when I entered the giveaway site I was locked out again. Thankfully the admins who oversee the security have now tagged this site as okay, so hopefully I'll be able to join a game this coming weekend; assuming there will be one. (I'm still not sure whether the connection will allow me to play though. The hotel advertises the internet connection as a high speed one, but I've not been getting fast download speeds.
We shall see. :)later

Is there a game this weekend?
If so: What's the password going to be?
Posted 15 years ago # -
I don't have the time to set one up this weekend. Perhaps rabbit or miss g@rgoyle will be able to host a game. I've had alot happen this week that has required much time with my family and friends, and I'm afraid it's going to spill over into this weekend. If one gets up and running, I may be able to pop in for a little bit. Or, who knows? I may even set one up on the spur of the moment ;)

k thanks anyway, and for the prompt reply.

No problems mate, if I should decide to set one up, I will make sure to send you a message chronopie =)

Unfortunately I won't be able to set a game up this weekend, but will the following weekend as I'll be back home in time to create a server. I'm hoping to repeat my previous weekend of Half Life - Deathmatch and then a Left 4 Dead server on the Sunday (that'll be the 6th and 7th June my birthday is on the 7th). I'll try to announce the games via Steam ASAP.
The connection is so fragile here at the hotel, there would be too many interuptions to the server. Also, the security settings that the hotel run lock out computers that connect to more than a couple of other computers, otherwise I'd have been happy to oblige this weekend.

Okay, I'm finally back online after sleeping away most of the last 24hours (in between trying to watch some movies, lol).
I've just realized trying to set up a test server with no one around is going to be a waste of time, so I thought it would be better if you buzzed me via steam so that I know there is going to be someone online to check the servers are working. I'll be online most of Friday evening until around Saturday 1am then again Saturday morning from 11am to 2pm. If someone interested in playing either Half Life 2 - Deathmatch on Saturday evening or Left 4 Dead on Sunday evening could just spare a few moments just to check that the servers are showing I' would be most grateful. If you aren't down as a friend on Steam, join the giveaway team then you can send me an invite which I will answer fairly quickly; that way we can communicate via Steam I.M.
If I don't manage to get any one to help the servers will still be set up come what may at the following times:
Saturday: Half Life 2 - Deathmatch from 10.30pm till who knows when
Sunday: Left 4 Dead from 11pm till 2am (maybe longer if anyone asks)
All times GMT and the password for both servers will be:
cholon
I hope to see you there.

Okay, thanks to deadgiveaway and Wizzard, my server set up works, so anyone interested in jumping into a half life 2 deathmatch later today you're welcome. If you haven't joined the Giveaway Steam group, you can find the game by starting up Half Life 2 - Deathmatch (it can be downloaded free provided you have Half Life 2) and clicking on find servers. at the top left hand side of the server list are two symbols. Ones for locked games and ones for the VAC potection. The servers name is called Giveawayoftheday Half Life 2 - Deathmatch and can be found easily if you click on the locked symbol which sorts out all the locked games. Also click on the VAC symbol. When you scroll down search for those games that have only the locked symbol, they should all have been grouped together if you clicked on the symbols once. They are easy to find. Just click on the server name to get into our server. you'll be asked for a password, which is cholon (all lower case)
see you thereRegards

Sunday's Left4Dead server will be up and running in a little over an hour. If you have the game, please do join me in my birthday zombie killing fest :) If you join the giveaway steam group, you can access my server by clicking on my name then clicking on the drop down menu, which has a link to take you into the game I'm playing.
I've chatted with Wizzard and Deadgiveaway about holding these weekend meets a little less frequently because there are only a few members turning in for a game. That's not a problem as we have had some great fun, but I don't want to be doing this every fortnight (wizzard one week then me another) if there are only going to be two or three playing all night each time we set up a server. I hope you understand. :)
Personally I think maybe once a month, with members saying they will provisionally be there would be brilliant. I don't want to make it so that you feel obliged to play as that's not fun, but it would be nice to know how many may turn in on an evenings play. I realise that were are living with time zones, so what's ideal for one person isn't a good time for others, but I'm quite happy to compromise and play when others want to as I no longer have to go out to work. If a game is announced well in advance it will give the community plenty of time to decide they 'may' play, or make arrangements not to plan other commitments so that they can play. Please post here and/or on the steam announcemnt page, with your preferred times of playing. Thank you.
How does this rest with you all????
(I'll make an announcement on the Steam giveaway community page as well)

I've had a bit of a brain farc today and forgot to install the Left 4 Dead dedicated serve on the computer I've decided to use today. The steam servers must be overloaded as it's taking ages to download the darned thing, so if there is anyone hoping to play soon, please bear with me. thanks. i'll have it up and running ASAP - probably in about an hour. (00.30 GMT)

Sad thing is: I hopped on the HL2: DM server, and no-one else was on >( -- grr

What time did you join? I was on from 10.30pm GMT Saturday till nearly 5am GMT Sunday. Wizzard played for a short time, DeadGiveaway played all night with me and OMGZombies played a couple of stints. I left the server on till around 9am Sunday.
I do think that I've not been giving enough notice to the community. When Wizzard set the giveaway steam community up, the gave a months notice for the first game and that one was well attended. I think maybe the problems we've had in the interim period may have put some off as well. But my problems trying to set up a server have been solved. I've announced the next game I'll be hosting to be the 4th July, though am open to suggestions about whether to change the date a sit is a celebration in the US. I've also announced a Left 4 Dead game for Saturday 20th June. Wizzard has said he will be available then and I'm hoping OMGZombie can join as well.
What I'd like to see is the communities’ ideas about how to make this project work – it’s a brilliant idea, but we need players to join in. Should we post all the times that we may be able to play, so that if you fancy just dropping in you can check to see if someone 'may' be there. If 3 or 4 members said Wednesday at a specific time was good, I’d be quite happy to set up a server for that period. It may only run for a few hours, but at least we would be getting some online games in. I much prefer playing online with a group that I know, rather than jumping into any server that’s available. The camaraderie is great. It’s almost like having a family. (sounds crazy, but it’s amazing how people from all walks of life, nationalities, ages etc can play a game and treat each other like equals, unlike in the real world, where prejudice and opinion lurks – the clan I was part of had ages from 13 to 70 and we all got on as though we were good friends, chatting on team speak, emailing each other, exchanging birthday cards and sending /sharing stuff with each other. It was brilliant.
With respect to team speak. If the project is successful and we get regular games with enough players to justify it, I will subscribe to a Team Speak channel so that we can make the game even better. I’m sure some of you have already experienced VOIP or team speak while playing online games. Hen playing Team Death match it’s great to be able to chat to your team mates, excluding the opposing team, unless you opened up the global channel. :)
I do think setting a server up every weekend is impractical at the moment as we don't have enough members joining in yet. Once the internet games project gets off the ground, it will be more practical to set up a server regularly. I'm quite happy to set one of my computers up as a server and leave it on all weekend if necessary, but I don't want to be doing that if only one or two community members are going to play for a few hours as it's just not economically viable.
There's no way that I want people to commit to specific times as that takes away the fun factor; you have to jump into a game when you're in the mood and when you don't have other responsibilities, so it's hard to track down an ideal time where everyone can play together.
I used to jointly run a private box server with an American friend (though I was the minor party). We ran several games and had about 14 clan members, who used to pop in virtually every day. We did have set times at the weekend where we would all try and join in, but because we were spread across the globe, some would be playing mid morning, while others were playing mid afternoon, and some in the middle of the night when they should have been in bed (that was usually me, lol. It worked to a certain extent because the games we played (for example Americas Army) were good and we all enjoyed playing them immensely. there's noting like a good team deathmatch or a cooperative game.
