Hi everyone :)
Can somebody give me some ideas for the above genre of (preferably free) games for my son. He has been given a joystick for his birthday, and would like to use it!
Thanks in advance

Suggestion:
FlightGear — version 2.I haven't tried this game, but it has a reputation of being a thorough simulator.

You can also browse a Freeware list at the Caiman Website:

I'm playing (actually, trying to make a mod on) Space Interceptor: Project Freedom. It should support joysticks. But I'm not sure where to get it. There are people on Amazon selling it. A demo is available at GameSpot.

You'll find several in the free games synopsis (G@rgoyles). There's also some excellent free space combat games such as Babylon 5. I'll be posting another one this week called Vega Strike tht has a Star Trek mod
(thanks pavid for the heads up on that game)You'll find details of Flight Gear in the synopsis:

There's also other simulators including a model airplane sim.

Sorry I'm so late in replying. For some reason I didn't get notified in my email?
Could be because I logged in via Chrome instead of IE.
Thanks for the info guys, I'll check them all out, much appreciated!

If you have Steam you can try out the demo for an arcade style flying game called DogFighter. It's pretty good and has quick controls for doing things like barrel rolls so it's fairly beginner friendly. The demo has one level and two different planes you can try and is a pretty good representation of the full game.

I realize that most of the games below are not free, but generally you can pick them up quite cheap and most are much better than the free games that are available.
You can get a demo of Tom Clancy's Hawx via Steam as well. It's well worth checking out. The game plays more like an arcade flight sim rather than a true flight sim and is a lot of fun:

Hawx
There's also a fabulous flight sim called Wings of Prey. The graphics are the best I've ever seen in a flight sim. This one is the real deal. you can get a demo via the following link:

Wings of Prey
Although ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead is primarily a military sim there are jets and choppers that you can fly. The open world aspect of the game lends itself to some excellent dog fights in the air. you can download the demo HERE
Finally another fighting game called Battlefield 2 has loads of jets and choppers that you can fly. the modding community has created hundreds of free extra maps as well, so there's almost a never ending supply of new environments to fly through.
Battlefield 2
I don't think you can pick up the original game on it's own as there are game of the year editions and gold editions. Steam sells the complete edition for £14.99, which despite the game being over five years old now it's still a bargain. You get the original Battlefield 2, Battlefield special forces and the two booster packs called Armoured assault and Euroforce, though the latter two are now free with the latest patch (v1.5) The patch adds several new maps as well. Great game with many opportunities to fly various jets.
You may also consider earlier battlefield games such as Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. both of those games also have lots of planes to fly. The first title Battlefield 1942 has bombers and spitfires as well as other WWII planes plus one of the expansions has secret weapons that includes weird and wonderful jet fighters. You can probably pick up both games very cheaply on the net.
Battlefield 1942
Battlefield Vietnam
In fact I've had more fun flying via the two games mentioned above (ArmA II and Battlefield 2) because the planes are easier to fly because you don't have all the extra controls associated with flight sims. :)
ArmA II
The following image is from the soon to be released Battlefield 3. unfortunately it's multiplayer only:
Battlefield 1943
Here's one I nearly forgot about called Wings of War. It was available for free some time back, but the link I posted in the games synopsis appears to be dead (or it was the last time i tried to download it.

also worth the money is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 - only 9.99 on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/15320/
this is L-2 Sturmovik and the sequels Forgotten Battles, Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters, Pe-2 add-on, Manchuria and 1946. over 200 flyable Warbirds :D
tho this is a Simulator and tries to be as accurate as it can be. (still fully supported as well, the latest patch took us to 4.09m just a couple of months ago)

Thanks Khai, I forgot about that one. I have the Steam version and a hard copy that I picked up from a charity shop several weeks ago for 50 pence. ( bought the second copy for my son).
You can also purchase Microsofts Combat Flight Sim 3 from Amazon for less than £3.

Hi Ringo, I just updated the images to include some from ArmA II, another great military sim that has some excellent planes and choppers to fly. The environments you explore are beautifully rendered and amongst the largest of any game i can think of except maybe Just Cause 2. I didn't include that in the above beause there's only a few planes available to fly. Still, it may be another one worth checking out. :)
