Most computers don't have a floppy drive anymore, but your motherboard probably still has a floppy controller, and it might be enabled in the bios.
If there's no floppy drive attached to your machine, first enter Device Manager and look for Floppy disk drive and Floppy drive controllers listings to uninstall them if present.
Shut down/power off your machine, wait thirty seconds to flush RAM and reboot. Enter your bios and search around for a floppy controller. Make sure it is disabled.

Hey there spud. We're glad to help anyway we can. Perhaps you should give us a little more info on your current system

Try hitting F1...
Could you take a picture and post it for us?Posted 14 years ago # -

That's actually not certain anymore. many new motherboards (the one I have an example of is an Asus M4A78L-M from 2009, though I'm not betting it's the earliest) don't have a floppy controller- but the drivers for the onboard RAID controllers still need one- For windows XP. Catch-22. Vista? not me.
I'm even less likely to use win7 since the backup idiocy surfaced, and it sure ain't cheap. rather use XP and spend the bux on hardware!
anyone know where I can get a cheap USB-Floppy adaptor? (there is mention of using a USB flash drive, but that's real thin on details.) I suppose having a USB floppy drive around wouldn't be too dumb, as there seems to be a whole bunch of software still assuming one will be on any computer it's used on. <sigh>
But to the problem:
First, I'd go ahead and hit f2 for the bios, go into the top left 'general' page, and the floppy drive settings I'd set to None for both. If that doesn't work, then try advanced and kill the floppy seek at bootup, then 'integrated peripherals' and turn the floppy controller off.
That's if you don't need to have a floppy drive operational, otherwise you'll probably need to replace the drive. Though checking the cables may do the job if one worked loose.

I wonder if they're still running their backup...
But I don't think this is an issue for the average home user with smaller HD.But aside from the unpractical, time consuming backup feature and the disappearing restore points issue, 7 is quite good actually...
Still have an unused Iomega 100MB external zip drive (COM) around here somewhere, in case someone's interested. :)As to spud's problem I think we both agree it's most probably a setting in his bios that needs to be changed, unless his floppy drive needs replacing.

If its the drive itself,e-bay(under £5),I've picked up a few to fit into rebuilds I've done.I also picked up a usb floppy drive for £7 which I use for flashing bios on newer motherboards with no floppy onboard.

Just wondering Deserthead...
I never had one of those...so are these usb floppy drives faster in reading and writing?
(still having a lotta floppies ,it could come in handy).Posted 14 years ago # -
Drive I have is a 2x speed drive,some info,not a lot,at -
http://uk.insight.com/p/SMDFDUSBT2/smartdisk-usb-floppy-drive-titanium-edition-di.html
hope info of use to someone.I don't use it a lot,but at times it is very useful.

I had something like that happen when my 2nd HD went out. I've always got 2 HD's on my machines.. one for a backup.

Regarding USB floppy drives, it's like comparing it to a Zip drive. The only reason the floppy drive isn't as fast as a Zip drive is because the media can't handle the speed.
(I have a whole stack of floppies that I have absolutely no idea what to do with. I should have backed up the Windows 95 set that was on it before (complete!) I started randomly formatting them. Of course, it was back then when I didn't know much about computers, and weren't interested in resurrecting a Win95 system. Write to me if you want any floppies :)

hello tried roberts suggestion there were floppy drives listed in device manager, uninstalled them, bios show internal flopy drive on turned this off . error message reads drive 1 not found serial ate sata -2 still have to press f1 to boot up spud

You might be having hard drive troubles. Still, post a picture of the message. This problem might turn out somewhat serious. I can't remember what exact item it is, but go into your BIOS setup and search for something like "rescan drives" or something similar so that the BIOS can reset its cached drive parameters. Also, if your system supports it, do a hard drive scan from the BIOS. If you press F12 when the computer starts, there should be a list of startup items. On the bottom, there should be an item that has to do with hard drive scanning. Enter that.

SATA channels can be individually turned on or off in the BIOS. So if you turn off channel 1 or 2 ,depending on the exact message you get(1) ,you wont get any messages coming up.
(1)For instance:
Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1
Drive 2 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-2
(assuming your current drive is listed as 0)
GM what's your opinion?Posted 14 years ago # -
I think it's better to find out the cause of the problem rather than hide it. Turning off a SATA channel could potentially cause other problems as well.

hello GMman sorry do not know how to take snapshot and post it (absolute beginner) tried the items you mentioned above but neither were there tried reseting defaults but have lost sound now as well. can you lend me a big hammer, i wonder if a reinstall would work. spud

Harddrive ! dell dimension 5150 desk top with 80 gig h/d dvd reader/writer and cd drive.this problem only started last week drive 1 not found sata ate.
Looks like you only got one but may be PC see two go in to BIOS Auto-Detection all the Harddrives Primary Master click Auto-Detection it will come up with Capacity 80 gig or in MB now Primary Slave Capacity be on ' 0 ' MB if not Auto-Detection & it will up date to ' 0 ' MB if no Drive Exit Save Enter Y (PS may check all drives at the same time)Posted 14 years ago # -
Gman.. I still have all the original programs on floppies.. DOS, Win95, win3.1, and on and on if anyone needs copies of them!
Posted 14 years ago # -
@spud: A BIOS screen capture is hard to do unless you're running a virtual machine. For you, just take a camera and upload a snapshot of the error.
Posted 14 years ago # -
LOL...That makes two of us,Copmom.Add PcToolsPro for Dos to the list.
Was it you who once said GMTA.So it looks as if spud did a factory reset of his bios settings...
Posted 14 years ago # -
Yep Robert.. That's me ... I'm guilty of GMTA (great minds think alike)!

evening all i have made a note in long hand drive 1 not found:serial ATA SATA-2 stike fi to continue f2 to go to setup. spud
Posted 14 years ago # -
Spud,
GM ain't gonna like part of the solution but read this in Dell forum ,in which they provided help to a similar issue on a similar computer.Posted 14 years ago # -
I still don't understand why the system doesn't stop looking for a drive that doesn't exist. The only reason it would do that is if there is something beyond SATA-2 that needs to be added. Say spud, did you make any hardware changes to your computer before this happened?
Posted 14 years ago # -
hello all. iam not 100% sure what i did but i tried all of your tips and advice and i am pleased to say it seems to have sorted itself out and i have got the sound back as well. so once again a veery gratefull thank you for taking the time and trouble to help an old git whose only foray into the world of computers was a commadore amiga 500+ with a huge 2 meg of memory!! which at the time i thought was great,so once again thank you all very much. one final question is it hard to move everything but the os on to an external drive. spud
Posted 14 years ago # -
Congratulations Spud !You've made it! :)
What do you mean by move everything but your OS ?Backup things from your document's folder?
But I am calling it a day.Maybe someone else will join in.
Bye for now.Posted 14 years ago # -
hello robert. no i have a lot of games and other software which i have downloaded to try over the months, which is probably the cause of most of my problems,i just want to leave the original basic os on the internal hd and transfer everything to an external hd when i get one, to save messing with the internal hd anymore.i figure an external hd is cheaper to replace than the computer.which type is best to go for possible 100-200 gig for ease of use.iam going to call it a day now as well 12.45.thanks spud

I'm afraid you won't be able to transfer installed programs to an external drive to get back to a virgin OS.Of course there is software available that claims to help you with transferring some (smaller) programs you own.
The best way is however to make an image of your drive when Windows and some essentials programs are installed.
Then choose the external drive to install some of your big games/programs(except for maybe MS Office)
But even that won't prevent the registry being cluttered and your system slowing down after a while. So that's where your image comes in handy ,to restore your system when this happens...
Btw I'm sure WhiteRabbit can inform you about some good deals
if you want to buy an external drive!I remember this question has been discussed before,but...um.. it's too hot over here to look for it now...so maybe others will join us.
Yours melting away...
Just in case BK reads this,I am not wearing pink bedroom slippers either.
