Does anyone know what the lowest version of Excel is that will work on a 64-bit Windows 7 computer? My Excel 4 will not work and I hate the newest version of Excel that comes on the computer. Thanks. Word 2000 works if that means anything.

Terri, I don't know about the lowest version that will work, but Excel 2003 does work fine on my Win7 (x64) computer.

Thanks Campy. I'm heading to Ebay now.

Terri, the problem you have is that you are trying to use a 16 bit Windows program (Excel 4) in a 64 bit Windows system (7).
Recent Windows systems have a compatibility layer built-in but it only goes back one step!
So your Windows 7 64 bit system will work with "Most" 32 bit programs (with the exception of security (Anti-Virus, Firewall, ETC...) applications and Drivers which absolutely need 64 bit versions)
It will NOT support 16 bit programs of any kind and, unfortunately, Excel 4 (from 1992) is one of those.
After careful research on Excel versions, I found that the lowest version of Excel that would "possibly" work with your 64 bit system is Excel 95 (Version 7).
As I suspect you don't like the new "Ribbon" interface on the Office version that comes with your new machine (Probably version 2007), I would recommend you try and find Office (or Excel) 2003 which is the last 32 bit version "WITHOUT the ribbon interface".
There are versions XP (2002) and 2000 but these lack some of the improvements made for version 2003.
Thanks to http://spreadsheetpage.com/index.php/resource/excel_version_history/ for helping in jogging my memory about Excel versioning.

You could also try OpenOffice (a free open-source program) that is compatible with most versions of Excel (and other Office programs like Word or Powerpoint) and is kept up to date.
I use both Microsoft Office (2003, 2007 and 2010 Beta) and OpenOffice (various versions) on my three (3) machines (XP tower, Vista 32 bit tower and 7 64 bit notebook) and find them all good enough to keep.

P.S.: I will be moving 435 km (270 Miles) to the north on Monday May 3rd so after that date (and until I get the Internet plugged back), it might take me a little longer to respond but I will still connect by Wi-Fi at my local library every two days to stay in contact and retrieve my emails.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to download this Open Office product but the website never connects. Does anyone know if the site is having problems? I was able to download it about a week ago but then couldn't install it because that was when my computer wasn't recognizing me as Administrator. With the computer back to factory settings, that download shouldn't exist anymore.

Terri, I just tried and had an issue with the default download, but tried a couple of the mirrors and they were working.

It's finally working, keeping my fingers crossed that it installs successfully and works on my computer.

It worked. Thanks to you all.
I assume if I ever have to send a file to someone, I need to convert it to an Excel document first. Is that the case?

Terri, people with MS Office can use a translators or a Sun plug-in for Office to open OO files. However, it is probably best for you to convert to MS format before sending so they don't have to bother or get confused. That is what I do when using OO.

If you frequently share workbook data with people who use an earlier version of Excel, you can work in Compatibility Mode to prevent the loss of data or OpenOffice
