embarrassed to ask, it's such a basic question- but--never used a joy stick before, and just acquired one-how does it work after you have installed it to the computer? Can every game use it-or just certain ones? And if only certain ones, do they automatically use it, or does the player have to input a request to use it? Downloaded star prince from yesterday to see if it would use the joy stick as it's a shooter game, but it just uses the mouse.

Not all games use a joy stick, in fact not may do these days. there was once a time when all games used them, but their use has more or less gone out of fashion apart from flight sims.
That said some games do have configuration options to use a joy stick. you just have to check each game to see. there are also programs available that can configure games that don't generally use a joy stick into games that do, but I can't remember the name of the program that you use.
Usually when you first connect a joy stick you are asked to configure it; usually after installing the appropriate software for it. Thyis allows the X and Y axis to be configured as well as the various buttons that you find on a joy stick.
Check out the following useful article on configuring joy sticks:

p.s.
You can get free games that use Jouystick from the following address. I don't have WOT installed at the moment so can't tell you whether the site has a green rating.

thanks so much W.R. That really clears it up. I thought that maybe a joy stick could be used when GOTD had games that only used keys instead of the mouse.
this is a saitek stick, so it was plug and play, and I saw the configuration is good. but, seems like it won't be used much by me anyway.
thanks again--

Flying and driving games can usually be set for using a joystick, also a small program called x-padder may be able to map the joystick to the keyboard.Use search, top right of page,to find out more about x-padder and there should also be a link to it.
