I've been refreshing since this morning and no game as of yet =(
I understand if a game hasn't been acquired for release today but at least post a message to that effect.
Thanks!

I sure agree with Ziad...it would save me a few bucks on my phone bill not having to come back 15-20 times to see if a game got posted. Have a nice day all.

No game at all this weekend then....
Posted 15 years ago # -
I was hoping yesterday was a fluke but it does appear as there won't be a game today either. =(

Seems as though you are all right. NO GAMES either 02/05/09 or 03/05/09 and normal software for 02/05/09 delivered by email 08:03 03/05/09 already out of time and no normal software as yet (12:40 03/05/09) for today.
Come on Giveaway get it together or apply notice to webpage!!!!!Posted 15 years ago # -
Makes me wonder if they're going to do away with the games completely now. If so, I may as well remove the link from my tool bar as I haven't much interest in the stuff posted during the week.

I agree with Ziad too. Kinda bummed there are no games the weekend at all :(

Given that there was no game yesterday or today and no notice of such in the team's blog, I sent the following comment to gamegiveawayoftheday and I thought it might be useful if a few others of you who make a special effort to come to this site did so as well.
"Game Giveaway of the Day Team
Just a one sentence message such as "sorry, there will be no game giveaway today" on the blog would be nice and show a little respect for your users' time and willingness to provide feedback.
Yes, its nice to get something for free but a one sentence (DATED!) post in your blog --I don't even ask that you give us a reason --doesnt seem to be asking for much. Thanks"Posted 15 years ago # -
Well, another weekend with no game while waiting patiently for the weekend to arrive. Have you ever noticed the regular giveaway of the day during the week, programs generally have a negative response compared to positive response. It seems the makers of this web site would see that and move gamegiveaway to every day while the program giveaway would be on weekends. During the week the programs I have no use for, or my computer is already equipped with some of the programs. I just wish they would go back to the old way...a game a day. Same with Ashara5, I may as well remove it from my bookmarks as it seems it is getting less and less of anything good.

Awwwwww c'mon everyone.. there must be a logical explanation for all this.. no point in coming down on the GOTD team. We're all just spoiled. If nothing else, use this time to clean your house or do something not computer related .. they have been offering us some good stuff over the years, and it could just be that the reputable programs just don't have anything new for us at the moment. Or perhaps their servers are down.. there are a lot of reasons this could happen, so let's not complain and keep the faith! We're all spoiled!!

I don't know who is responsible for the games, but Chip posted a thread that he was going to be gone this weekend for school. Maybe that has something to do with it?
Posted 15 years ago # -
I've posted on this subject previously, but can't find the thread or comment so I'll try to repeat what I said. I do agree with Copmom on this one though.
When the game giveaway project was started back in Dec 2006 there were no game distributors giving free games away, so the project was like a breath of fresh air. Also the standard price for all arcade games from most of the game distributors remained quite high at $19.99, apart from a few such as Big Fish and Real Arcade, who ran game managers or games that we not easily transferred from one computer to another. Over the intervening 29 months there have been a lot of changes made to the way arcade games are being sold, plus we’ve hit one of the worst recession since the great depression of the 1930’s. Lot's of game distributors have set up their own game offers to entice gamers to their own sites, for example all games bought from Reflexive, Pie Eyed Games and a few other sites now cost only $9.99 rather than £19.99, Gamehouse give an arcade game away ‘every’ day (ad supported), Alawar give one game away each month and sites such as Gametop, MyPlayCity, FreeGamePick and others have a large growing collection of commercial games that are always available for download free though there are other prices to pay for these games such as browser hijacking, tool bars etc. All these factors together have made it harder for the game giveaway administrators to find game houses and developers who are willing to give games away to this project. (Personally I think the constant whining rather than constructive criticism has something to do with it as well)
There may not be as many games being given away on a weekly basis as there were early last year and before, and many of the games may not be up to the standard of some of the better arcade games (though this is subjective because one mans filth is another mans gold so to speak). That said, there is still the occasional gem of a game that IMHO makes it worth coming back to see what’s for free. I’m so grateful to this project because it gave me the opportunity to try oout genres that previously I wouldn’t even have bothered to entertain because I though them boring; for example tower defense and platform games. Now I have loads of platform games that I’ve bought and even a few tower defense games such as Defense Grid: The Awakening plus other genres). Remember that most of the games given away are free standing, so you do have a game virtually for life once you've activated it. There are no advertising, no pop ups or tool bars included, and the games are guaranteed malware free.
With respect to the No Game today question; if it's not posted within a few minutes of the time it is usually posted then I think we can assume there's not going to be a game for that day. To be honest, apart from the summer break the team had in 2007, there haven’t been that many breaks where no games have been posted. Okay, it went from a game every day to games at the weekends only, but that was still two games every week, It went to weekends only because they couldn't get enough games to cover every day; (probably for the reasons I've tried to indicate above). I know for certain that Alawar had said they wouldn’t be giving any more games away for the foreseeable future because while corresponding with one of the owners I’d mentioned how generous it had been of them to give so many games away over two periods. They replied saying what I’ve said above. That was before the games went to weekdays only.
I only hope the game project does continue, even if it was in an even more attenuated form. Perhaps it should return to its roots, where it started, when a game or so was posted every week over in the giveaway section of the project.
To those indicating that they are just about done with the project, I believe it’s comments like that as well as the plethora of other comments of a negative unconstructive nature that may sound the death knell for this project. What distributors are going to want to give to a project where community members are leaving in droves? I’d certainly see it as a sinking ship if I kept reading such discontent and would t5hink twice before allowing thousands of copies of my game to be given away. (Yes, there are thousands of these games downloaded by the community, though from the comments section and voting system you’d never guess. Most that download can’t even be bothered to leave any race apart from the download statistic.
I apologize if I upset anyone with my comment, but having spent a considerable amount of time trying to support this amazing and unique project in a voluntary manner (because I felt a lot of gratitude for what the owners have tried to do I find it a little annoying when I see such comments as some of those above.

I can't believe that all of you people are complaining because you didn't get something free and than when you did get something free it wasn't something you liked. Or it wasn't every day. If you can't do any thing better than complain about some one who is working hard to bring you some thing for nothing get off your duffs and go find something better.
In todays econony you should be glad that you get any thing.
Do any of you even bother to say thank you?
Get a life.Posted 15 years ago # -
I remember daring to ask about the lack of a free game back a year, or so, ago. Still never got an answer . . . just a lot of lectures re: expecting something free (from a free site?).
A single sentence from ggaotd (No game(s) this weekend) would eliminate the whining, so who is being bull-headed?
Probably why I often forget to check by here anymore. Used to be my homepage, but didn't appreciate the lack of any response.Posted 15 years ago # -
I think they should change their name to game give away whenever we <moderated> feel like it. Stephen i agree with pretty much everything you say and appreciate all that you do for this sight, but I think that someone from management should inform us of what is going on. There is a huge number of us who have been here for years and witnessed the first push to their uncaring and (IMO)ultimate downfall when they went on their "vacation" and promised grandiose plans for revamping. I was hoping for competition to BF but when they failed to deliver well I just gave up. I do check still every weekend, probably out of habit or maybe the masochist in me likes getting disappointed 9 times out of ten LOL. So I think they need to put up or close down stop dragging us through the mud. Now back to the games.

I was also wondering where the free game was for yesterday and today. However, I will not speak negatively of the GOTD crew. It is just nice being able to receive a $19.99 game for free every weekend. So, if they happen to not have a game this weekend, I can definitely deal with it.
Posted 15 years ago # -
What if GOTD alternated between programs and games through the week? Just offer whatever they had available at the time? I can imagine how difficult it must be to come up with quality software everyday that a company is willing to hand out for free.
Maybe too, they could put up a good program that is already free once in awhile, just to get the word out and provide people with a link and comments. Everyone is always giving free alternatives anyway.
I feel like this site is one that tries to open our eyes to good (or sometimes not so good) programs that are available. Too me, that could include both the free and the not-free stuff.Posted 15 years ago # -
It's Gamegiveawayoftheday, not Gamegiveawayeveryday, semantically speaking...

Ouch E mom (not mine) I did not read your post before i posted or I would have said to you that I think they are not working hard on anything, if they were don't you think they would have had a game today or yesterday? Or even given us an explanation. It still goes deeper than that it is their lack of responsibility to those of us who had high hopes for this sight and are constantly being disappointment. I won't go into the free game debate with you, you obviously have a strong opinion on this and I feel any alternative view would be dismissed by you.I will tell the rest that Game give away of the day. In simple terms so all can understand is that my definition of this tile is that 1 game will be freely given away EVERY day. DUH. If this does not happen then they are falsely advertising as well as string us members along.
Hey Salvo,Change the name or close down.Moderator Note:
Please do not use such strong expressions as this user has. Be nice.Posted 15 years ago # -
Also i was surprized this weekend,
I must say that i do not want to speak negative, but if there normaly thousands of downloads, meaning a few thousands of visitors more then that!
I that point of view i think it would be propiate to place a message for these thousands of visitors. Then again the negative posts and off topic posts are also not welcome on the downloadpage between the comments.
They distract the visitors and producers from the goal, feedback and commercial side! But i will check still every day, cause i am thankfull for the offers.

Some of you may know me as Jempeace or Jill, I came home after 4 months in the hospital and had to re-reg. Now for this type of problem I save my expert! I'm lucky to have one! What's great about coming here is I can read the comments, doesn't work with Vista-copmom says jiggle the thingamajig, WR said uninstall and reinstall standing on your head.
Many of the people that come to this site, do so because they know if they have a problem someone will help! We're not all computer whiz kids.
I agree with WR when it comes to giving away games, times are tough!
I agree with the people that would just like a note saying, hey sorry no games this wkend. Though sh_t does happen! Maybe a server's down and they thought it'd be back up. Maybe someone was sick!
Why would game developers want to keep giving games away here? It's a good site with lot's of great people willing to help each other out. Most sites would love tech support like this. You can get more feedback here in 1 day, than many sites get in months. There's a great mix of pros and joes, young and old, casual and hardcore.
Thanks GAOTD! You guys are worth your weight in gold. For some of us (poor, old, sick and shut in), we can't wait to open our wkend. present. Knowing this maybe a
SORRY c u next wkend. note somewhere wouldn't be to hard. You know we appreciate you!Posted 15 years ago # -
Hi Russinindy,
Sorry, I did mean to add to my comment above that I agree about posting a message to the community letting us know; though I'd already guessed on Friday evening because I usualy get a heads up on what the games will be so that I can write my reviews. As none were forthcoming I assumed the worse. Still, I do think we've had some excellent games recently. And contrary to what some would suggest, only around 50% of the games have been repeats.

Am I disappointed? Yes. Am I gonna throw a temper fit or go away in a huff? No! I have gotten so many nice games from them that I still haven't finished. You don't kick a dog when it is down..and I am sure the recession is effecting GGOTD as it is so many others. Many a site has closed down, changing it's tactics, or charging more or less(depending on the product). I, for one, would like to thank GGOTD and Whiterabbit for helping me learn about many new games I would have never tried if not for them.
If you need a free game so bad, then check out this link...
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4534""Free Game for the Weekday" is a project that was started by Whiterabbit -aka- Games Guru and he has been working his little "Bunny Butt" off to give us games that are the same or not better than what GGOTD gives us when they can. Then we got wizzard_of_ozz2004, reverseOrder and thewebmaster trotting right behind him. g@rgoyle has done an excellent job of keeping up this list except when that wiley rabbit goes bananas and gives us a dozen or more so games.
Just my two cents.

I too agree that we have been spoilt; I was just wondering what was happening which is why I started this post...
GGOTD has been INCREDIBLY generous( I have gotten some great games in the past year and have been introduced to creators of games that I never knew existed), and I just want to iterate what many have said,(_Including_ our own estimable W Rabbit) that times are tough and indeed other game sites have become perhaps more competitive by offering full games with ad support or full games period.
(Look at Bigfish offering FOUR in the last while!)
As well there is almost an, "embarrassment of riches", when one considers the multitude of free games endlessly researched and offered by that free game "team".I am cleaning up my house and gardening today ...
take care all!

Hi Jill, nice to have your thoughtful opinions back. I hope all is well with you. I think I've already posted a welcome back post elsewhere, but the drugs are always playing with my memory. :(
lol delenn. I can't help myself. Sadly some think the older games are either naff or just too ugly to bother with because they are so used to the amazing graphics of recent games. That's sad because some of the games I post are actually quite amazing. Take Darklands for example. It originally came on 10 floppy discs (or was it 12, I can't remember). It was set in the 15th to16th century. You traveled around on a map journeying to various towns and cities throughout Northern Europe. On entering a town you got menu based options which enabled you to find new missions, buy or upgrade weapons. Go to university to improve certain skills, make potions or buy magical and religious items. The game came with a large manual and a colorful map (which are available with the download that I’ve posted). The manual contains details of all the amour and weapons you could wear and carry, the spells you could make and cast, magical items you could use, and saints you could call upon, plus lots more. Within the city and out in the wilderness you would frequently be set upon by brigands, wild animals and other enemies such as witches and daemons. There were castles to attack, villages to protect and many other missions. Combat was similar to the game called The Gauntlet (which is also available via the games synopsis that G@rgoyle created), which is a isometric viewpoint. You control four characters and sometimes five when you pick up companions occasionally. The combat system is quite interesting, and is similar to some rts games, but more intricate.. I could go on, but I suggest you check the game out. It’s far better than most arcade games I’ve played, despite being 17 years old. The game has so much depth, you’ll be hooked if you like any sort of adventure game. You do need to run it via DOSBox, but if you’re worried about that Wizzard has posted a thread called DOSBox made easy.
Oh yeah two more things about Darklands. The basic game play is based on real places and beliefs of the time. The developers went to a lot of trouble to make the game as historically accurate as possible, though there is some poetic licence. There was supposed to have been a sequel that covered Southern Europe and Britain, but it was never realized. :( I used to play this game for days with hardly any breaks (before the kids were born) . I'd previously played The Gauntlet in the arcades with friends (it was a coop game for four players) so was really pleased when I saw the combat system

Jill and WhiteRabbit ... you both bring up a point that I've thought about often. I wonder what a poll of those who praise GOTD and those who don't would show if you asked their age, economic status and state of health!!! I've heard SO many repeat what Jill just said and what I have said .... for those of us who are old, sick, poor, and shut in, GOTD is absolutely wonderful!
When I first found it I went crazy and downloaded almost everything (never know when you MIGHT need it!). But now I may go a week or even 2 without downloading and then I may download 2 or 3 in a row. It depends on need - usefulness to me now. Even with huge HDs you have to be reasonable! But I keep an eye on the site for those I know who are more busy than I and don't have the time to check as often and call or email them if there is something they might want. As to games, for my house, I am very picky .... NOTHING that can be considered violent in any way!!! I have a grandson and other children who use my computer games that feed off that sort of thing. Even if the shooting is not shooting other people, I find it makes them more hyper and more likely to get into trouble so it's easiest just not to have them there to begin with! So even when there IS 2 games every weekend, it is very rare for there to be 2 games for me! BUT I recognize that what I like IS NOT what everyone else likes so I am happy with the ones I get! Many of the ones in the weekday games are not for me either but I do refer them to others I know! (Thanks you guys!!!)
What I'm trying to say here I guess is that for some of us this site may be more of a blessing than it is for others. So please ... if you are one of the "others" ... don't try to ruin it for those of us who need and love it!

Okay, no games posted by GGAOTD. But have ya'll noticed all the time and effort (on this Games Discussion forum) Whiterabbit puts into supplying us with links to free games all during the week... at least several a day? And some mighty good ones at that. As well as wizzard of ozz and reverse order, on a regular basis. Link for list:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4534
And yes, it would be nice if we had a short confirmation that there's no use to keep checking for a game, especially for those on dial-up. That's not asking much at all. But I've got a bulging folder full of games from Wrabbit and the other daily game posters, so no I'm not hurtin' for free games. Thanks, Wrabbit, wizz, rO, et al! :)Posted 15 years ago #
