I have several times downloaded and supposedly installed programs - most recently, Easy Macro Recorder - get the "activated" web page, but then can't find the program anywhere to run it and input the code. What's wrong?
Can't find the program

Look in you programs folder or programs menu, hit start > programs and see if the shortcut is listed there.
I might be correct in asking you to look in your notification area, might be an icon in there which links to the program.

Another way to find them is to look to the bottom left of your screen. Click start then click search. Select to look for files and folders then enter the programs name. Your pc will search and show you all entries and there locations.

I'm not trying to be critical here, smilinglady, one of our game gurus, Whiterabbit, will tell you he gets this question all the time. I don't know about EasyMacro Recorder, but some people like their programs to be pretty "self-contained" or "standalone" which means they don't put anymore than the bare minimum on your computer. That means it's unlikely to conflict with other programs and can be uninstalled pretty much by deleting it's folder. Some don't create desktop icons and or even shortcut entries in your start menu, like Lee says. They consider this the ultimate in "clean installs", though those two things rarely cause any problems. It's always best to watch the screen when you install. Usually, it will tell you where the programs going (often asking for your permission), like C:\Program Files\EasyMacroRecorder. That way it's easy to dig down into that folder, find the actual program, like "EasyMacroRead.exe", right click on it, and go down to "sendto". That'll give you the option of putting a shortcut on your desktop. Of course, if you note where it's going beforehand, you don't have to search for it.
If you normally do this, I sincerely apologize. In that case, you must have had a run of bad luck by downloading a lot of programs that don't even tell you where they're installing their program folder. Obviously, those can be a pain in the neck.

So maybe I misdirected you all. The zip file downloaded, unzipped, left me with readme and setup. I run setup, it gets activated, but then I can't find the .exe file to run the program. It just isn't there, not found in program files or search or anywhere. So it would seem it's not installing at all. So now what?

Do what watcher13 suggested. During installation and after you click the accept agreement, the very next screen should tell you where its going to be installed ie. C:/program files/whatever your installing.
Some developers will install the folder with there company's name like c:/program files/laughing bird software/logocreator.exe
Try it again and take your time during the install.

Angel you're right about that.Normally it's C:\Program Files\Easy Macro Recorder.
Smilinglady,
I guess if you're on Vista you must be logged in as an administrator and run the setup.exe as one.
When installed/launched, the program only displays itself in the system tray on the right.(or notification area, right)
Look for a green dot and arrow.
Right click on it and select options to find the register button or launch the program by clicking on its name.Posted 16 years ago # -
I'm sorry, smilinglady, I realize now I was probably off target. Robert's right, if you're under Vista, try running as an administrator. It sounds like you're installs are aborting. Are you seeing the terms of service agreement? You should have to agree on the terms of service on most, if not all software. If you're not getting that far, you're installs are definitely aborting. If you're seeing the install routine, then you'll probably have to just look harder for the folder. But, if you're not seeing the whole routine, then they're aborting and need administrator permissions.

I'm using XP and am the administrator, and guys, I've been installing programs since before most of you were probably born. Some Giveaways install just fine.
This one, which I really want, and a number of others indeed seem to be aborting. All it did is go looking for the web site, and got there and told me it was activated, but that was it.

You'd be surprised at our ages smilinglady. I served 27 years in the Police Dept. then retired and went back to work. LOL
The setup packaging links with GOTD, did the browser open? Oh and sorry for going into so much detail, we didn't mean to offend you. We have beginners all the way to coders in this forum so when someone comes in we have no idea of your system and experience.

smilinglady, we couldn't tell whether you were just having trouble finding the executables or whether they weren't installing right. We didn't know, because you didn't say. We also wouldn't have wasted your time - and ours - giving you Vista advice if we knew you were running XP. Again, we didn't know because you didn't say. Sorry, you're having problems on your system, but most of us aren't, so it isn't the GOTDs. If it was, it would be all over the comments section and this forum. In other words, I'm afraid we don't have any magic bullets for you, because yours isn't a standard problem. Maybe we could help you if you gave us more details. The activate routine in the setup is often seperate from the install and often occurs first or sometimes simultaneously, so it doesn't necessarily tell you anything if it activates but doesn't install. I have heard of some problems with SP3, but not enough to say for sure, and again, we have no idea what's on your system. Good luck!
BTW, I'm 51, a former electronics technician and spent a short period of time on a help desk. And I'm one of the least sophisticated people here, many of whom, I've gathered, are on a similar part of the hill age wise as I am.

I'm 50 LOL

FWIW, I did have the exact problem (can't recall which program) when I installed to my external hard drive. Unfortunately after the verification web page launched, I didn't get a chance to verify the actual installation until it was too late to try again. Now I watch and reinstall on C: if any anomalies present themselves.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hey Chances, do you get a lot of anomalies on the giveaway's? If you do, and you ever see a pattern, let us know. It would probably be useful info.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hmm...
OK.I admit. I only got interested in things when I saw MS-DOS 5 on a computer.
LOLLeaves us with the question why the setup routine was aborted ...or blocked.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi Watcher, I haven't had many anomalies...just a couple and I blamed them on my PC and lack of horrible experiences. I've only had maybe 2 GAOTD programs that I downloaded and installed only to have the apps turn up missing. Never figured it was worth troubling anyone over. As I stated earlier, it may have been that the program(s) were not keen on being installed anywhere but the main drive. One of the files that would not work for me initially, did work fine after installed it on the main drive (C:). It could just be that I need to reformat & start fresh...yuck. If there's anything else I can offer, just let me know. :)

That makes sense. I'd say that's a kind of target specific install routine, like the ones that won't let you change the install folder. Thanks, anyway.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Ok, sorry for being a bit touchy. I'm using Windows XP pro, I don't find the executables. Anywhere. So the next time that happens I'll come back here with more details.
Meanwhile, the reason I wanted the program was to create a couple of macros for email addresses that would work in any app. I've forgotten what I once knew about creating macros. Any ideas?
And I'm 61.
