I love this site but gave up a long time ago as no matter how much advice I got here, nothing worked for me. I am not a Geek so I never can understand most advice even tho I managed to teach myself an amazing ammount on the computer the past 6 years all alone. But for some reason the past year and a half I ran into a lot of problems when it came to downloading and unzipping. In the past whatever I had to download did not require unzipping and anthing that did, I just ignored and deleted it as it always said "windows cannot open this" etc..... no search would find anything to open it and when I came here you might remember me as someone here advised me to get Alzip and that NEVER worked, just filled my puter with lots of stuff I could not open etc...then I was sent to other free sites but they are all on here and they just keep telling me they cannot download at that site and such!!!! I have the Wiksend (forvgive if I am not spelling correctly but I am in a hurry) and Dap and Free download manager and such but these went berserk on me eventually and started downloading tons of copies of nonsense each time I tried something at your site at record speed and refused to stop and I ended up with so much junk on my puter it was a nightmare!!! I am STILL deleting!!! I am totally lost now and out of room and so upset as I do not know what to do next. I just happened to come last night and saw this wonderful free program that I could REALLY use and once again the same problem! I cannot get it to open! I tried the Dap site that offered a free unzip download and it refused to download after a while also saying it could not from that site!!! Then I tried to write their e-mail and it is INVALID!!!! I could rip my hair out!!!!
What am I doing wrong???
This is so simple I know yet I cannot do it. I need simple help and no big talk I cannot understand and I soooo want this program before it is no longer free!!!! I also have Incredimail on my computer which I am sure causes a great deal of problems but I love it so will not delete it as it is my reason for having a computer!!! lol!!! I do graphics!!!
Please someone help me!!!
Thank u so much!!!!

If you are looking for a free unzip tool (that has no spyware, and works great), you should download 7-zip, http://www.7-zip.org/.
If you have regular Windows you can download it directly from here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z457.exeJust run the program and follow the installation process. When you've installed the program right-click the zip file you want to unzip, and a menu pops down. You should get a menu alternative called "7-Zip >", from there you can choose Extract Here, and you'll unpack all the files contained in the zip file to the current folder.
Don't be afraid to ask if there was something you didn't understand! If you want to remove software completely from your computer it's a good idea to use Revo Uninstaller: http://www.revouninstaller.com/
It's free and does a good job "cleaning up the mess".Posted 16 years ago # -
Hey Cathysue. DAP is just a download manager so what you need is a zipping/unzipping program. I use WinRAR but before that I used WinZip. Until someone else jumps in here and recommends a good free unzipping program, why don't you go to http://www.winzip.com and download the trial version so you can unarchive (unzip) this giveway.
When you install winzip it and you double click the download, winzip (or any zip/archive program) will sense what it is. Take your time and follow the on screen instruction for winzip and you'll have it unzipped. Then just follow the readme text that is included with todays giveaway to install the program.
Need any further help, just ask.
Enjoy,
ArchangelEdit,,,,,,,,, someone jumped in with a free zipping program before I made the post so disregard winzip...... Archangel

Hi CathySue,
I do not know if I will be much help for you , not much time left for the download. It would help to know what Operating System you have, size of hard drive, RAM, etc. Also what Zip program you are using? Can you download successfully from other sites? Which browser are you using? Sometimes just changing browsers will help for a successful download.
From your description of your problem you might and I mean "might" have some sort of malware problem, do you have extra tool bars that you did not install yourself when you right click on a program or extra tool bars in your browser that were not there before? Do you have unwanted commercial pop-ups on your desktop or is your computer running real slow or sluggish? All are signs that there could be some sort of malware.
If I can not get back to help you, I am sure that one or more of the wonderful people here will offer some assistance
Good luck, and please do not pull out any more hair, the program probably is not worth the extra pain, LOL.
Barry
Edit: See what I mean, will I was typing 2 people got in before me, and that is good.

Well, It is now 11:30 and I am sure I have a full head of grey hair by now.....the very same thing happened that has happened each time I try. I just do not understand what my problem is but I am ready to throw this computer out my window. You can only imagine how many hours I have wasted here since last night!!!! I know you all think "What a waste" But it was such a good program for me PlUS I needed deperatly to solve this mystery once and for all!!!!!
I am sure you would all agree with me there! How silly to go on this way when I can do everything else on my computer!!! I agree Barry, that there is most definatly a host of bugs loose EVERYWHERE in my poor puter of some sort!!!! I cannot imagine what malware it can be but something is awry because as soon as I hit download to the link that Paali gave me~it did exacltly the same thing it does everytime I hit the links people here give me, It totally froze up my entire puter!!! Now that is ridiculous for such a thing to happen as it most certainly was not the fault of the link!!!! It is something wrong with my puter! My only choice was to crash the puter and turn it off! Nothing else would work!!! Same as before...I tried again and same thing happened. Makes no sense. Also after I download the Giveaway each time, they ALWAYS say:The compressed zipped folder is invalid or corrupted!!! That is ridiculous!!! I can download from any site and get the basic same problem!
The only pop ups I get is irritating windows pop ups because I have a good pop up blocker plus AOL has a strong pop up control automaticly on it....I HATE aol as it is trouble enough believe me!!! I know it causes loads of problems but I don't know that it could cause any of my problems. I do not know exactly what you are referring too,Barry, as what browser and such, am I using? Toolbars? There are a couple that are over at Internet Explorer, and I really am stumped by that whole thing as to how it switches from my main aol screen area to that when certain things are downloaded or asked to open and it suddenly goes to IE and I hate it as that is only half a screen cause of that (maybe you all call that a giant toolbar?) but I am totally lost as to all that stuff! LOL!!! See, I told you I am not really sure of some of this stuff! Ha!
I can make tags and collect tons of graphics and such but not really sure of some of this you are talking about.
Because of all the work I do I got an external hard drive a few years ago that holds tons of stuff! My computer repair man told me I will not be able to fill this baby up the rest of my life!!! Forgive me but I actually forgot the size of it as it has been so long but I just pulled up the defrag thing and it says it has 76.31GB in total space in it and has 76 % space left and my poor c drive has only 51 GB and 10% space left!!!!! That had me really shook up the other night as most of my space is suppose to be free in there due to the external so I figure it must be all the stuff I have on my Incredimail and my son's downloading music and stuff!!!! I am not sure what to do as the computer guy told me I can not go any larger as far as adding memory to this as I got the biggest one that it will take last time and he said it should last me if I use the external! So I have done something wrong all of a sudden!!!! It MUST be the Incredimail!!!!!! I download a LOT in there but I had NO clue it had gotten to that point so fast.
Do any of you have any ideas of what else it could be?
That does not solve the main problem tho of what is causeing the downloading probs and preventing me from it and even getting them and an unzip program?
Yes, my computer all of a sudden got VERY SLOW, EVEN SLOWER THAN IT ALREADY WAS, recently plus I lost a lot of my main stuff in my aol storage area at the same time. So something happened there also...This shows whatever was wrong is getting WAY worse!!!!I am concerned it is ready to crash period! Also I should let you know I am stuck on the cursed DIAL UP! No choice here as I live in VERY rural Oregon!!!! Lol!
Sorry to have gone on and on but trying to answer most of your questions so I can get help! I have had to start and stop due to Aol CRASHING!!! grrrrr
It is now very late so I have to close but I appreciate any help u can give!
Thanks soooo very much to you all!
Hugs~
CathySue (sad I missed the download! weep!)Posted 16 years ago # -
Cathysue, it seems (but might not be sure) that you have a lot of malware programs, and unneeded software installed that slow down your computer. Also, you are in need of a good cleanup of your entire system, and probably get a new antivirus.
But before you panic about everything you have to do, it's probably just best to copy everything to the external and format.
But I am sure joblow can help you with your problems, so contact him and see how it goes. If you still experience problems please post here again.
EDIT: I should add that it seems like your download manager is causing some problems too. Perhaps it is the reason why you are having problem downloading.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Cathysue.. sorry you're having so many problems. The first thing that struck me when I read all of this is the following:
"I actually forgot the size of it as it has been so long but I just pulled up the defrag thing and it says it has 76.31GB in total space in it and has 76 % space left and my poor c drive has only 51 GB and 10% space left!!!!"
The number 1 rule of thumb I'd always been told is NOT to let your hard drive get below 10% available space! That might be causing a lot of your problems. Transfer some of those over to your external to free up some HD space on the C: drive.
Also, since you have that external HD, when you are downloading, you have the option on where to save it. Obviously you've been saving everything to the C: drive and that's what's been filling it up. Graphics & photos take up a lot of room, they should be moved to that external to free up some space. Especially since you're concerned about the machine crashing.. that will save you some heartache or else you lose all of it.
As folks up above said, all those zip files need to be unzipped, (I use winzip) or you just cannot use them. All the GOTD files downloaded are zipped!
You probably should get and run 3 programs that will find a lot of stuff on your machine that might be messing you up:
Ad-aware by Lavasoft: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
A-squared free: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
and CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
They will find and fix a lot of things that are causing you problems.
Hopefully some of this will help you get out of the hair pulling stage.. you don't want to go bald over a computer!Posted 16 years ago # -
Just a note: While 10% free space is a useful rule of thumb, common sense must prevail as drive capacities get larger and larger. Nobody would seriously consider that with the newer 500GB (or larger drives) that the same 10% is required. The optimal amount of free space to leave will vary depending on how the systems drive space is used.
The only certainty is, if you leave too little free space on a drive partition, the overall performance and ability to defragment the drive will suffer.
Posted 16 years ago # -
BuBBy, good point. But now I wonder if there is a new rule of thumb with all of the GB HD's out there. My 2nd internal and external are both over 300GB. But I go back to when a 20MB HD (or smaller) was a big deal and that's when I was told about that 10% thing.

Hi CathySue,
Wow! It dose sound like you may have a Malware problem and it would be best for your sanity to clean it up, Copmom has given you some great advise in her post, and I am sure it will help to clean the junk files from your computer. Another area of concern are the programs that are running in the background, some are essential for the operation of your computer, but there are some that are not so good and are using more RAM and CPU usage than your computer can handle and could slow your computer down to a crawl and cause unexpected crashes. You can check this, I am assuming you have Windows XP, shut down all the programs you have running, right click on any open area down by the clock in the bottom right hand corner, left click Task Manager, then go to Performance, if the bars in 1 or both of the little graphs are close to the top, you may need more help than I can give you here.
After you follow the advise from Copmom and if there is no signifcent improvement, my advise would be to go to the Bleeping Computer web site, they have helped 10s of thousands of people with malware and other computer problems. You will have to register to be able to post, I would start by posting your problem in the "Am I infected, What do I do" section, and follow their advise. You may be asked to download some programs that will give them a log, or cleaning tools for specific kinds of Malware. This is a free service and the programs and tools are all free also. You can find Bleeping Computer at:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/
Follow Paali's advice, you should back up any important files eg. pictures, important documents, on your external hard drive or CDs, before you go much further.
What are toolbars? If you right click on any folder or icon on your computer a popup box will come up with options for what you want to do with the program, most are good things, each line is a toolbar, but some malware programs will take advantage of this and add their own line, like Hotbar for example, and then if you click on it, it will take you to a advertising site or where ever, even if you do not want to go. A good example of a toolbar, if you are running Windows XP, is if you have a Zip file you want to open, right click on it a popup will appear, in the options, there is a option to "Open With" put you mouse pointer on that and you are given the option to open with "Compressed(Zipped)Folders", that is Windows built in Zip file opener, or any other program on your computer that will open these types of files, just left click on the option you want.
The same thing could happen in you browser. The malicious program will add another line or "toolbar" some ware, most often at the top of your browser's page and then if you happen to click on it you are off to another advertising page, were there might be even more malware just waiting to get in your computer.
Anyway, most Malware is not that hard to clean up, but you might have to do a little digging to get to them.
Good luck,
BarryPosted 16 years ago # -
Oh ow happy I was to find all your wonderful responses and help!!! A HUGE Thank you to you all for your time and advice!!!! I did go to C drive first thing back when I saw this shocking small ammount of space left on my defrag thing and I tried like mad to see what the problem could be and could not find it!!!! I knew I always am so careful to put things in my F drive (which is the external hard drive). I have everything set up with folders to automaticly download into that area whenever I click to save ANYTHING, so there is no way to make a mistake unless you deliberatly choose to choose to change it and go to another drive!!! Like I mentioned before, there was all the horrible silly little junk from downloading stuff from this sight that the free downloaders were leaving and I deleted tons of that but after much work and emtying the garbage can I was shocked there was STILL no space left to defrag!!!! This I did not understand!!! I went back and looked some more but there were no big things anywhere that I could find like pics and such EXCEPT of course Incredimail which has tons of stuff like that in it so that must be the bad guy but I am amazed that it could take up all the mempory I had added according to my computer guy I could not fill up!!!! If only my husband would not be such a penny pincher and refuse to take this in to him to have a look and see what the problem is!! :(
I tried to defrag and it says there is no space still!!! Just boggles my mind!!!
Later~I keep getting interupted and coming back! Grrrr! My poor Incredimail is so screwed up now it barely works~when it does work it keeps siffering over 900 emails from AOL of all things and they are all doubles and triples of the same thing which causes me to spend wasted time deleting over and over again...only to go back the next day and see it is starting all over again with the same bunch of 900 AGAIN!!!! Yes I have gone to AOL and long ago deleted those both from the main mailbox and the old and the permenently delete box so how on earth IM is finding these old emails is beyond me!!!! See why I am going nutty??? In the mean time we are stuck with no phone lines! EEEE-gad!!! House full of mad people sometimes!!! If I shut it down, tht is when it causes it to gather MORE mail as what some of the gals that work with IM told me!!! Soooo I try not to do that....OOoo me oh my!! Don't know what to do!
Exuse my spelling in the beginning of the letter and such as when I went back to add something after being gone, it would do nothing but delete things I had already typed so I gave up! ha! Never understand why that happens?
Anyway~Someone had told me before about these wonderful programs you are telling me about plus I read about them here before and I tried to click on them to get them and as I said above, all that happens is either my machine freezes up and I am forced to crash it to get it off or it downloads and will not open??? So I can never use these great programs to even try to clean my machine!!! Just the onther day my new friend told me about ccleaner and I recognized it from here so I clicked on it, it started to download and then for somereason I could not find it...then I tracked it down and when I clicked on it that time, nothing would happen!!!! It did not even try to unzip or whatever it needed to do to open! Since I cannot get an unzip program to even download, it is usless to try to get any of these since they require opening! :(
This is my huge problem of why I cannot find the bugs! When I ask AOL why their famous programs are not catching them, they swear they have to be...the have MCGAFEE ongoing all the time, I believe it is called(I may haveave Norton I had originally and it is still installed and they tell me I need to completely uninstall that which I have not done...I hate to do it as I paid for it years back and it runs each evening and checks things all the time and makes me feel extra safe...what do you think? (sorry I tried to add something up there and forgot it would erase what I had already typed!!! that is sooo aggrivating!!! I was trying to say I may have Mcgafee mixed up with another name starting with Mc, but it is a strong antivirus program that aol has running all the time.... then I wrote I have Norton installed already from the past etc....)Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi Cathysue. I can understand your frustration, believe me! Let me give you some advises based on what you have told us so far.
- Copy everything of importance to the external hard drive (just in case) before you do anything else!
- Uninstall all antivirus programs except one. Having more than one antivirus actually makes you more exposed to threats. Make sure you uninstall them completely! (if you do to the software's website I'm sure they have a guide on how to do so).
- Uninstall whatever download manager(s) you've got. I'm suspecting that's what is causing your download problems.
- Go to Start menu -> Run, enter "cleanmgr.exe" and press OK. Windows' own cleanup program should show up. Choose the C disc, and press ok. Windows will search for temporary files and junk that's been gathering over time. This is not as thorough as CCleaner and others like it, but it does clean up a bit. Perhaps just enough to get the defrag going.
- Uninstall everything you don't need or use. (Even if you donwload to your F drive, everything you install will automatically install to C (unless you change it in the installation process). So getting rid of all software you don't need is a really good thing, both to get more space and speed up your machine. )
- Delete stuff you don't need or use. (When copied over to your external drive, delete if from the C drive. You don't need it both places. I'm talking about documents, music, pictures, and that kind of things).
- If it's not a big loss, uninstall incredimail. It seems you've got a malware in there somewhere. If you're just receiving a lot of junk mail, I would recommend you get a new mail account. (A good rule is never to post your email address on the net anywhere. If you have to, write it as "name[at]mail.com", so bots don't pick it up).If you, at any point, are able to download again:
- Get Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/) and use it to uninstall programs with. It removes everything that's been left behind after the uninstallation (with some programs that can be quite a lot).
- Get Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php) and run a full system scan.
- Install all security updates and patches from Microsoft (http://www.update.microsoft.com/). It will scan your computer and prompt what you need. If you use windows update regularly there shouldn't bee to much to install.I hope this helps you with your problems. Please post what you did, and how it went. And don't be afraid to ask. It's better to ask before you do something you're not sure about. I think it's better to start fixing your system before you go and install more stuff from here and other places =) Good luck!

Oh, I am sending you and all the others, the biggest cyber {HUG} Paali!!! I have worried so much about getting rid of my NORTON since I paid for it cause it runs and checks everything for me and I am such a fraidy cat~Lol!!! But I really trust all you here at this site so I am on my way to delete-delete-delete and UNINSTAL!!!! And I thought I was almost thru with my spring house-cleaning! Ha!!!!
It feels great to have people I can trust helping me finally!!!
I know Incredimail is a big bog down in many ways, but it is my fav thing as I keep contact with sooo many people there and create "letters" (stationary) and darling graphics and it is a ball so I do not want to part with it or I would be bored out of my skull!!! I just need to do a thourough house cleaning there and part with most of what I have stored there obviously and put it over in F drive and just make it harder to get to!!!:(
U have no idea how much I appreciate you all!!! I will indeed be back and keep u updated!!! It may take a bit as I am also doing my spring cleaning in a hurry for company coming soon~but I will fit this in also as I do not want to loose my beloved computer! It is my best friend!!! LOL!!! Poor thing has been sick too long! Lets hope all you have advised will do the trick without a spendy trip to the fix-it guy cause some of the great programs u have suggested I did have before and that guy had the nerve to uninstall them for some dumb reason when he worked on this thing, and I have never figured out why? I was not the one to pick it up and he did not let anyone know what all he did....he just said I had unnessesary things on it and he took care of it! That is soooo rude!!!! Soooo I believe this is why I ended up in this boat in the first place!!!
Well, off I go! Thanks so much again!!!
Talk to u soon! ;)

Hi Cathysue
Just wanted say welcome to the forum,as to you uninstalling Norton I too had it and it is only good if you pay the yearly subscription fee for the updates. If not (paying the fee) then you don't have the latest virus, malware, etc. protection and is of little use.
There are plenty of free protection programs out there and no need to pay.
In regards to the Norton uninstall you may find it difficult to get rid of all traces of it,as I did. Just recently someone posted a link which will instruct you on how to do so.I will try to search for the link and post it or maybe one of the other members may know what thread it's in and post.Even with out the link you can still go ahead and uninstall Norton and get the rest of what it left behind at a later date.
Also it helps us to help you if you give info. on OS (operating system) and any other info about your comp.Unless I missed that in your posts, if so disregard.
Keep trying and as others have said don't hesitate to ask,the members and the Mods,(BuBBy and Lee) are a great group of people.
If you find yourself wanting to pull your hair out, stop and ponder this age old question,If a cow laughs really hard, will it squirt milk out it's nose?Edit - just found the link for Norton removal, compliments of Barry.

Incredimail no good do in you PC & you send & you get wait is this may work for you & look nice you try & take off? nill will work,do a look up with Google you see, take off wait you dont need, try download with out downloadmanger see if it better, given program during its 24-hour offer period, and you have to install
and _activate_ it during that period, as well.
The correct procedure of activation is explained in each days readme.txt
inside the downloaded zip archive.Posted 16 years ago # -
Ohhhh! Thank u soooo much for telling me about the Norton tip!!! How I appreciate this added help! I got side-railed into other work luckily and could not do it yet so now I can do it correctly the first time! So cool!!! I had NO IDEA it was not allowing me to get the newest updates and such so how I appreciate that you told me this info also!!! I have been trying for several years to find out if I should give up on it or not! Now I can do it in Peace! Lol!!! Silly~huh?
I just always felt u can never have too much protection!
I was not sure what you meant by what operating system I had, so all I know to say is it is an HP Pavillion version 2002, Windows XP, Service pack 2 with 496 MB.....you can let me know if there was something else you meant, Scubaguy!!! I am a real dummy at this stuff! Lol!
I have a huge external hard-drive I use on the side that I put most my stuff in, in order to keep functioning since I am a graphic freak!!! Lol! When I had my puter in the shop once, the fix-it man told me I was only the second busiest computer he had EVER SEEN in his shop EVER!!!! He said there was a doctor in town that actually had SIX computers in his home and he had them loaded with pics and stuff he collected and that he never thought he would ever see any puter loaded so full as that fella's till I walked it with my single puter!!!! He about died that I had it all on one and he luckily told me about the external drive and I ran down and got the biggest one in Staples and that was a life saver for my set up!!! HE also put in a new motherboard for me.....It was my very first computer too as I did not grow up around them....we did not have them in school...only one in the whole school and it was always crowded so I didn't bother trying to get near it! Never learned how to use them so I taught myself and have been addicted ever since!!! ;) Soooo much to learn tho as I only know what I could figure out so I value all u r teaching me...I live waaaay out in the boonies on a cattle ranch and ohhhh how I LOVED YOUR FUNNY ABOUT THE COWS!!!!!!!! You made me laugh my silly head off and I really needed that!!!
Thank u for making me ~SMILE~!!!!
Now off I go to get rid of ol' Norton!
C ya all later!!!
Thanks bunches!

CathySue.....you talked about your hard drive being used up and you blamed Incredimail.
I don't see any way possible that Incredimail is having any negative effect on your hard drive. I have had it for well over a year, with email coming to it from 6 different accounts covering two people, and it barely makes a dent in my hard drive, even with the fact that I save every single email I receive and every one that I send, which adds up to thousands of e-mails. I suspect that if your PC is "bogging down", it is for another reason.
E-mails take up a very small amount of hard drive memory. You could have a million emails in Incredimail, and still have no problem whatsover with it using up valuable hard drive memory. I would strongly advise you NOT to uninstall or delete Incredimail. I firmly believe that if you dump your Incredimail, there will be no changes in your PC problem.
Posted 16 years ago # -
By the way.....how long has it been since your hard drive has been "defragmented"?

I am such a dummy!! I forgot an important question I wanted to ask y,all!!! Ya might remember I told you I lost recently a lot of stuff stored on AOL itself, in the AOL mail center and the place u store mail and such, all gone!!! Stuff I have had in there for YEARS all gone and I have no clue what happened!!! So, my question is, rather than calling AOL and sitting for at least an hour or more and going batty following their instrucions trying to find and retrieve it IF possible, do you know if it is safe or possible to run the system restore thingy on here? I have never done that of course and am a big chicken to even try without expert advice!!! Don't want to loose anything else for sure!!!
A friend told me to try it and see if it would find my missing things so thought I would see what all of you thought? Now it has been about 2 or maybe 3 weeks since this happened so does that make any difference?
Thanks for your help again!!!

Cathysue,
4 Questions i would like u to answer for me to help u.
If u dont have a lot of experiance finding malware ect and getting rid of it will be hard.
1 do you have your XP install disks.
2 do you have many programs on c drive that u can NOT live without or get again.
3 How much free space on ur external drive, and last but not least,
4 Do you have a hour or two.
The fix for u will make many problems go away.PS If u did not log on to AOL for over 1/2 mths they may have archived ur stuff.
If this is the case they may be able to restore it for u.
Dont ring them send them an email (if u think they have archived it, from what i said above) and ask them to restore it.Now if u may answer above 4 questions, i will try to help ASAP.
Are u online here NOW.Posted 16 years ago # -
HI Paali!!!
I am sorry I did not find your questions! We got involved in other things and it is 2am here in Oregon now so I must hit the hay or I will never get up in the morning sadly! Lol!!! I do not know if u r still there either also!
I will try tho to answer some of your questions before I go!
Yes, Our computer can install disks, we just rarely have need to!
I have practically nothing on C drive especially since I went and cleaned it out! I sent anything I was not sure of to F(External) drive and deleted the rest!!! So now it is almost vacant!!! I just wish it were possible to run programs from F(External) drive!!! Lol!!!! Funny huh???
My External has 75% free space left, 57.93 GB.
I am consistantly logged onto AOL as I really have to since we are on dial-up and it is so slow and Incredimail needs to siffer the mail over to it or it doubles and triples and it is just a mess!!! Now it is doing that anyway so I have a giant mess! WE do not use the phone much so do not care unless there is an emergency luckily.
I have wished so much I could contact AOL thru email but I never can find any way to do it...they are MISERABLE to contact that way sadly!!! I think they do it on purpose to force us to call them.
I wish so much I had known you were trying to help me earlier!!!
Well, maybe you can write and tell me what to do when you are on again!
Thanks so much for your interest and help!!!
Goodnight!

Hi Creamypre!!! I just posted to Paali and then your posts showed up finally!!! It is strange how that works!!! I had no idea your's was there till now. I am amazed to find someone who does not blame Incredimail!!! You are the first one who does not! Do you save Letters in there and songs and graphics too?
I am releived someone does not blame it anyway....I do know all that stuff must take up space as there are a lot of graphics saved but surley not enough to take up all my 500mg I bought!!!! That was a ridiculous thing!!! I have tried again tonight to find the problem and there is nothing I can track down in C drive so the mystery of why there is suddenly little space showing is just driving me nuts as everytime I went to defrag before it always showed tons of space.....I actually stopped defragging so often instead of weekly as I used to because I heard on a show on TV that it was actually harmful to the computer to do it!!! I was totally shocked and so I decided to stop for awhile and see what someone else said....then this happens and I go to do it and this is the report I get when I hit analize!!! I wanted to faint! No more space but 9%!!! Made no sense.
I was not able to defrag then as it said it was impossible so that is why!
Now I really have to get to bed! lol!!!
Thanks so much for your response too!!!

Hello CathySue,
The major problem with Malware is some of these nastys hide themselves in places on your computer were only the knowledgeable should go, they will add entries into your Registry, and or install .dll files (files that make a program run) in your Windows System files, most anti virus and anti malware programs will do a fine job cleaning these things up, but there are some of these malicious programs that will need special expertise or tools, much like the Norton uninstall tool, to get rid of them permanently. So what I am trying to say is, if your computer is not running smoothly after all your cleaning you might want to take it to your "Fix It" man or if you want to try to fix it yourself, post in a online forum that specialize in the removing of Malware from computers, such as Bleeping Computer or Castlecops.
In your preceding post you say you have no Zip file opener and you can not install programs onto your external Hard Drive, well you do and you can! Windows Xp has a built in Zip file program, it is just a little harder to use than some. The steps I would use to do this and keep the files tidy would be: first, open your external drive, place your mouse pointer to any open space on the page, right click your mouse, go to "New", then to "Folder", left click on that, you should now have a "New Folder" on that page, rename that folder, program files, or anything you want, use this folder to place your programs you want to install, open that "new renamed" folder, create another new folder, and rename this folder the name of the program you are trying to install.(create a new folder inside your first folder for every program you want to install)
Now go to the downloaded Zip program icon, right click on that, put your pointer on "Open With", you will be given the option, "Compressed (Zipped) Folder", left click. this will open up the Zipped file and you will see a icon usually named SetUp or something similar. Open that file and eventually you will be taken to the part of the setup that will ask you where do you want to install this program, left click the "Browse" button, a explorer type window will open, go to your external drive, open that, then your first new folder, open that, go to the folder that you created for the new program, open that. Now hit OK, then finish the SetUp process. Some other Zip file programs are easier to use, but if you want to install a program on any drive, other than C, you have to change the destination manually.
Edit.. I forgot to mention, you can use these steps for any type of instillation setup program, if they are not Zip files you can skip the use of a Zip file program.
Have a great day,

Hi again CathySue.
Thanks for your replies. I know these things take time, and there are a lot of questions to answer, but take your time, and read carefully what people write and ask you. The more information we have, the easier it is to help you. You’ve already been asked a lot of questions, and been given a lot of advices, but let’s take things one step at a time.I am wondering, are you still having problems downloading? (did you try to uninstall the download managers?)
This is important to secure your system. If you can’t download, we should try to fix that asap, but there are still some things you can do. First you need to have only one UPDATED antivirus installed. Unless it’s updated it’s pretty much useless. Do you have a firewall?
You should also install all security updates and patches from update.microsoft.com
There are a lot more things you could do to speed up your system, and increase performance, but I think securing your system is the first priority. That’s why it’s important to make you able to download, so you can install some spyware tools.
Let’s see if we can get that sick machine of yours well again. And don't worry about mixing up the names =)

Paali.. good advice.. step one is make sure system is secure, and that you have a firewall. Don't install the SP3 if you're running WinXP... still a few bugs to be worked out on that as stated on another topic.
Cathysue, don't worry about printing things out, that's smart or you'll go crazy trying to remember everything.
Right now I'm running ad-aware and a few other things to see what 'bug' I've picked up here.. suddenly my mouse is acting like it's got a mind of it's own, and that I don't like! It just started and so far says 46 things detected! And my email didn't want to close properly, so somethings trying to take over. Never know where we pick things up, even just going to a web site can plant something on the machine!
Between everyone else here you're machine will get well again. We've all been down that road! Just try to remember that your computer is nothing more than a glorified adding machine! (Or so they say)?Posted 16 years ago #
