Sorry about the odd title - I couldn't think what to call it. I've been downloading some old hidden object games from JenKat to replace ones I had as free-game-of-the-day from Gamehouse (with ads) so as to be able to play them without all the ad interruptions. I was rather surprised to find that although I've now got them from JenKat in totally different places on my hard disk, when I went into the first (Little Shop - Memories) it picked up my username and position in the game that I'd got to from the Gamehouse one. Can anyone tell me how to find out where it gets this info from as I'd expected to have to start all over again. I know I can simply start over with a new username, but it rather surprised me that it had somehow remembered which makes me think it's not in the Game folder, but stored somewhere else on the PC. I'm doing this partly to keep all the games in a different partition, but that's more difficult if stuff isn't only in the Game folder. BTW, I'm running Windows XP.

In all likelihood the information was stored in the registry and picked up by the game when you re-installed it. The registry is a place of mystery and wonder full of nooks and crannies which store all kinds of information. If you want to completely eliminate any information stored by your game in the registry you would need to use an uninstaller such as Revo or the one included in CCleaner. Even then, left over information can still be stored in the registry. Generally this is harmless and in some cases such as this one, can be a useful thing.

Actually, it may not be the registry but someplace like Appdata, ProgramData or My Documents that has the information. You can try to remove it using RevoUninstaller but it may be necessary to do a search for the game name and see if you can find it that way.

Go C:\ > C:\Documents and Settings\* C:\Documents and Settings\*\Application Data
* = You name
and UsersC:\Documents and Settings\All Users > Application Data
go Folder Options > Views show hidden files and folders > & untick hide as well
clean Registry then go in and look !! ??
be for you do all this make a system Restore point and back up the Registry key be for you go delete
as for RevoUninstaller do check and see if save game not in folder as some times it will save folder with save games all-so C:\Documents and Settings. you still need to clean the Registry most time RevoUninstaller makes a good job on the one it clean but not the rest of the users

Thank you all for your advice: I'll certainly do a search on the game names and see what comes up, but I don't think it matters enough to want to get into the registry - and I love the description of the registry that Pavid gives above! I don't suppose it's taking up much space and I can always change username if I want to restart. I was just curious as I naively thought everything would be in the game folder - it's fascinating to find out what other things get changed and added to without realising.
