I have a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and when I use Firefox.... I have noticed that the letter "w" (upper and lower case) in the forums is faded.
It looks as if the mid-section of the "w" doesn't have enough ink. The rest of the site's "w" looks fine -- it's only in the forums. And only the letter "w" is faded. And it's only when I use Firefox (9.0.1).
My old laptop with Vista has Firefox (9.0.1) and it doesn't have the faded "w".
Does anyone else have the faded "w"? Does anyone know why it occurs in the forums only? Does anyone know why it occurs with Firefox but not with IE? Does anyone know why it happens with the new laptop but not with the old laptop?
My knowledge of computers is limited. I can live with the faded "w", but would like to understand why.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer any (or all) of my "whys" :)

Try updating your graphics drivers. Find out what model of graphics card you have (or chip) by opening up the DXdiagnostics pane. To open the dxdiag pane go to the start menu and type dxdiag in the search field. When the diagnostics pane opens click on the display tab. You can then see what your card or chip is. Usually NVIDIA or ATI/AMD. Go to the developers website and click on the link to their driver download section. It's all self explanatory.
It could also be a problem with your graphics card, or the resolution you are using
try changing the resolution to see if that cures the problem.Posted 13 years ago # -
Oh the faded W - that is because all webpages usually have a www in them and for a browser that means that w tends to be overused. As Firefox is so popular, that is a lot of W's to go around, and to put it simply, it is starting to wear out. Mozilla are aware of the problem and are coding a fresh batch of W's for the next version of Firefox, which is currently in beta.
I've installed this version and I must say, the new W is one of the nicest (and darkest) I've seen since Firefox version 3.

Could it be the harbinger of SOPA?

Why worry with wonder when water-washed W's wield weak welcome?

Could be a long shot, but maybe you've changed the default font in Firefox and the forums layout.css file(font family) don't support it.
@ⓒⓗⓘⓟ:you sure have a way wit www's. :)
Reminds me of a time I couldn't even read "ⓒⓗⓘⓟ".Posted 13 years ago # -
I want to thank everyone for taking the time to reply with advice and/or humor....both are appreciated :)
The mystery of the faded "w" has been solved...YAY.
After following the advice: my driver is current and I now know where to go and what to do when it needs updating, my resolution was (and is) at the recommended setting, and Firefox font was (and is) at the default setting.
Robert's reply made me think about any other changes I had made. I knew I had changed the view setting.
So I reset the view setting. And as I squinted at the screen (an eye exam and new glasses is on my to-do list) I could barely make out that the "w" was no longer faded...YAY.
I no longer had faded "w" but I couldn't see the forum to read it :)/:(. I clicked "Zoom In" twice and to my surprise the "w" remained un-faded and I could read the forum. A third click makes the print larger and fades the "w".
It's too bad that Firefox's "Zoom In" doesn't make the print bolder the way IE does.Posted 13 years ago # -
You might want to give the Firefox add-on "NoSquint" a try. It works better than the general "zoom in, zoom out" and per the linked site "NoSquint allows you to adjust the text-only and full-page (both text and images) zoom levels as well as color settings both globally (for all sites) and per site."

ChrisS...thank you for the link to NoSquint!
I read the info and decided to give it a try.
I really like it. I set the full page zoom to 100% and text zoom to 110%...now the text on most websites is much easier to read and it's easy to bump it up for the sites that need it.
It's easy to use/customize and it works....that makes it a keeper for me :)Posted 13 years ago #
